New permissions FAQ
This article is in reference to new Harvest permissions, being released the week of March 14, 2022.
Why can't I see my assigned people's projects?
In the Projects Overview (Projects), Managers can only see projects that they are assigned to manage and projects that are set to show the project report to everyone assigned to the project. If they are not the manager of a project and that project's report is not set to be shared with everyone on the project, Managers will not see the project listed in their Projects section (even if their assigned people are assigned to it). You can see more in our article on What projects can I see in my Projects section?
The purpose of the Projects page is to report on projects. If you'd like to report on your assigned people, you can do so from the Team Overview page (Team) or by viewing time reports (Reports > Time or Reports > Detailed time).
Why can Managers no longer edit projects?
With old permissions, Managers (formerly Project Managers) could make edits to projects they managed even if they didn't have permission to create new projects.
With updated permissions, project editing is an explicitly granted permission, along with project creation. Managers will need to be opted in to Create projects, and edit projects that they manage to edit projects with new permissions.
Why can Managers no longer add tasks to projects?
With old permissions, Managers (formerly Project Managers) could create new tasks from the create/edit project form, but they didn't have access to Manage > Tasks.
With updated permissions, creating tasks is an explicitly granted permission. Managers will need to be opted in to Create and edit all clients and tasks on the account to add tasks to projects now.
Can I assign a specific person to approve someone's timesheet/prevent other people from approving that person's timesheet?
Here’s how approval works with the new permissions:
- All Administrators can approve:
- all time and expenses for everyone in the account
- All Managers can approve:
- time and expenses tracked to projects they’re set to manage
- time and expenses tracked by any of their assigned people
There is no way to prevent a manager from approving time for their assigned people or managed projects.
Why am I receiving timesheet submission notifications?
Administrators and Managers can choose to receive an email notification when timesheets are submitted for projects they're set to manage.
Managers with assigned people can choose to receive an email notification when timesheets are submitted by their assigned people.
This is a single notification for both managed projects and assigned people. It can be enabled/disabled by individuals: Click your name in the upper right corner and select Notifications. Select or deselect Email me if timesheets are submitted for projects or people I manage next to Approval.
